Chapter Twelve

Ruhi didn’t care about the gasps as she and Sean walked hand and hand down the aisle. There were parts of this ceremony that were traditional and parts that were all Sean and Ruhi. This part, the part where they came into this marriage of their own free will, this was all about them.

Sean’s hand engulfed hers, giving her warmth. She squeezed back to show him that she was with him under the gazes of those gathered. She couldn’t explain how much it touched her that he’d sought her out during his time of need.

More so it shocked her how hurt she felt when she thought he was breaking up with her. She’d been trying not to get caught up in the preparations of the wedding, but the little girl inside her was bouncing on her toes when she put on her wedding saree.

Her breath caught when her mother wrapped her in the fabric. Her hands shook as her sister applied the henna. Her heart raced when she heard Sean’s voice at the door.

He’d looked devastatingly handsome from the back as he stood in the entryway. Ruhi hadn’t cared about tradition, she wanted to see him. But she’d also wanted him to see her.

She didn’t doubt that she’d made the right choice in partner. Sean would be an excellent husband, father, and partner in life.

Already he was discussing things with her. She’d told him some of the details of her five-year plan. Mainly the parts that dealt with the upbringing of the baby. She made no mention of the offer of an exit plan for him at the end of the time period. He’d made no remark about wanting a way out as she told him of her plans.

Instead, he offered her guidance on some of the finer details. He offered input where she was unclear of her direction. He’d stood by her when she put her foot down on somethings their mothers had insisted on in the wedding. He’d also commiserated with her at other points when their mothers asserted their will over their children.

Yes, they were a great team.

And now they were walking down the aisle together to make it official.

It would seem her mother would get another portion of a traditional Indian marriage. Though Ruhi’s parents wouldn’t be giving her away as they would in the kanya daan portion of the ceremony, Sean and Ruhi were performing a version of the mangal phera ritual. In that ritual, a couple would join hands and walk circles around a fire. The couple walked hand in hand through their gathered guests toward the sun.

They came to stand before her father who would be officiating the ceremony. Her dad was all smiles as he looked down at his youngest daughter and the man who would promise to take care of her for the rest of their lives.

“Friends, family, canines.”

The dogs yipped as her dad announce their breed. The humans chuckled. In the distance, a bird called out a song. It would seem everyone and every beast was excited at the impending union.
